Stream the film for free September 5-16 and join an online Q&A with Roger Sharpe, the man who saved pinball

In the 1940s, pinball was outlawed by New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia who claimed the game was one of chance, not skill, and thus a form of gambling. Residents in [city/region in library service area] can discover how GQ journalist and pinball wizard Roger Sharpe helped overturn New York City’s 35-year ban on pinball during Big Movie Watch, a Kanopy film club. From September 5-16, “Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game” will be available on the Kanopy app (https://lib.kanopy.com/bigmoviewatch/) through Sherman & Ruth Weiss Community Library. “Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game” is an award-winning movie that follows the true story of Sharpe, an unsettled writer with a fantastic mustache, who finds solace and confidence in one thing he has mastered: pinball. When a police raid destroys the only machines he can find in 1970s New York City, he learns the game is illegal. Sharpe reluctantly joins forces with the Music and Amusement Association to overturn the ban while falling in love with Ellen, an artist and single mother.
