Creation: A Frankenstein Story is a never before seen adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel, written and directed by Monica Cross. This staged reading features John Adler, aka Son of Mel as the Creation and Janet Rowney as the Creator.
This staged reading is a part of World Premiere Wisconsin. WPW is a statewide initiative to feature new world premieres in the form of workshops, readings, and productions. This is done through community partnerships such as the Sherman & Ruth Weiss Community Library hosting this reading of Creation: A Frankenstein Story. Creation: A Frankenstein Story turns Mary Shelley’s expansive novel into an intimate two person performance. Locked inside the room where he was brought to life, the unnamed Creation has contact with only one other living person: his Creator. Having not expected to succeed at his experiments, the young scientist is terrified of his own Creation, and returns again and again to only check on his living experiment, whom he believes incapable of understanding. But to his surprise and horror, the Creation is absorbing every word spoken to him. Suddenly, the scientist is confronted with the eloquent pleas of his Creation begging for more than claustrophobic life within the laboratory.

Monica Cross is a playwright and dramaturg who relocated to the Northwoods of Wisconsin in 2022. Her work has been produced at Silk Moth Stage in Virginia, Theatre@First in Massachusetts, and Whiskey Theatre Factory in Florida. Her play Cyrano on the Moon, a sequel to Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac, has been produced at Tampa Fringe, Minnesota Fringe, and Cincy Fringe. Her work has been a semifinalist for the O’Neill National Playwrights Conference. Her short plays have been produced at schools across the country from middle school all the way through the collegiate level. Her new play Alignment about the anxieties of artificial intelligence was just workshopped at the Comparative Drama Conference in Madison, WI.
